I hope your “guess” is as good as mine… To cut the long story short and upon learning these two episodes, it led me to believe that the anonymous caller who gave the extraordinary puzzle to Gufeld (in my opinion), was Bobby Fischer. A way to return (with a bang!) what happened some 25 years earlier, when Gufeld gifted him a tricky puzzle to solve during the Sousse Interzonal.
You may also agree that such a study with great depth and beauty can be devised by a genius of chess, needless to say, that is the Fischer’s legend. There is one other grandmaster (a good candidate) that could have fabricated such an incredible position in his laboratory – the name is Pal Benko.
What do you think? Well, I must say only the inventor of the “Dance of the Elephant” can claim such. Till next time…
